Directed by Doug Liman, with a script by Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry, this 2024 spin on the 1989 Patrick Swayze movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter hired as a bouncer at a bar in the Florida Keys. The bar, named only The Road House, has been dealing with some rowdy customers as of late. But they are no match for Dalton (Gyllenhaal), a man who politely inquires about his victims’ health insurance situation before he ruthlessly beats them up. Those of you who didn't come of age in the eighties, and have somehow managed to not see "Road House" on cable in the three decades since its release, might be wondering what all the fuss is about. Once there, Dalton finds the job tougher than expected as a sinister local magnate who controls most of town's business doings (Ben Gazzara) doesn't much like the way he operates.

However, that reboot was confirmed to be canned when rumors of the Gyllenhaal film first surfaced. Its been around 35 years, but fans of the cult classic road house are in for a treat its remake is releasing in 2024. Described as an “adrenaline-fueled reimagining" of the "cult classic,” “Road House” follows ex-UFC fighter Dalton (Gyllenhaal) after he takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse. However, once he’s there, he discovers that this paradise is not all it seems. With reboot, remake, and reimagining mania continuing to sweep Hollywood, studios are starting to make some perplexing choices about which past hits are being resurrected for fresh runs at the multiplex. And as it is, many of the more perplexing cinematic revisits announced surround possible fresh takes on (or sequels) to 1980s hits like "Labyrinth," "The Great Outdoors," and "Highlander," (per ET Canada).
Road House Stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor Mcgregor, Lukas Gage, Billy Magnussen,.
Co-starring with Gyllenhaal are actors Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Joaquim de Almeida, Conor McGregor, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, B.K. Cannon, Beau Knapp, Darren Barnet, and Dominique Columbus. The reason why they decided to remake the 1989 cult classic remains unknown, but talks of the remake have been going on for nearly ten years. Besides a seemingly new plot and new location, the film has also been embroiled in drama in recent months, from casting choices to producers. The film appears to have some similarities with the Swayze, mainly Dalton being a fighting machine working at a roadhouse. Dalton is back to his fighting ways — and this time he’s causing havoc in a new location. But it is rendered with such obvious affection and steadfast devotion by Swayze and everyone involved (particularly the rarely better Sam Elliott), it's all but impossible not to be won over by its charms.
Is Glass Key, Florida A Real Place? What To Know About ‘Road House’ 2024 Filming Locations
Fans of the original Road House know it starred the late Patrick Swayze as James Dalton, a bouncer hired at a roadside bar who was tasked with whipping the establishment into shape. Given the reputation of the bar, the crowd it usually attracted and the handful of less-than-adequate employees, the job proved not to be an easy feat. In the new reimagined Road House, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as ex-UFC fighter Dalton, and he seems to be a bouncer who’s a little more lethal with his hands and slightly more humorous.
Jake Gyllenhaal gets ripped, might rip throats out, in Road House remake
With this ensemble, the movie promises to deliver a thrilling and engaging experience for audiences. Instead of being a “cooler” with a checkered past, Gyllenhaal’s character in the remake will be a former UFC fighter who somehow manages to get a job at that rowdy Florida roadhouse. How he ends up there will surely be fleshed out in time, but for right now, the idea of a former UFC fighter running security at a raucous dive bar sounds pretty, pretty good. This includes who will be showing up as part of the stacked cast, what the movie is about, and how its star shocked the world of mixed martial arts when he showed up at a UFC event and made news around the world. Some of the most iconic ‘80s movies like Red Dawn, The Karate Kid, and Robocop have all received the remake treatment in the past decade or so, but one legendary, and badass action flick, 1989’s Road House, has never been remade. Well, that will soon change with the upcoming reimagining of the Patrick Swayze classic with Jake Gyllenhaal leading things.
One of the biggest points of contention is the fact that the movie won't be released in theaters; it will only be available on Prime Video. The movie was filmed in the Dominican Republic, with a handful of scenes filmed in Las Vegas. Road House's world premiere is scheduled for March 8, 2024, at South by Southwest as the opening night film. Notably, UFC champion Conor McGregor will be in the movie as well, though his specific character hasn't been revealed. Deadline reports that he will not be playing himself but will be playing an original character. Jake Gyllenhaal is taking on the role of Dalton in the remake of Road House, and he is joined by several other cast members.

He takes a bus to Frankie's establishment, called simply The Road House, and befriends Charlie, a teenager who runs a bookstore with her father, Stephen. As noted on IMDb, it may not matter in the end, as his attachment to the project is very much a rumor at present. Either way, we'll be quick to update this page the moment Gyllenhaal's, or any other actor's casting in "Road House," is confirmed. "We are thrilled to collaborate with this great cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, and for them to come together to reimagine the classic MGM film as an action-packed adventure for our global audience." The 2024 Road House was directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity) based on a story by Anthony Bagarozzi (The Nice Guys), Charles Mondry, and David Lee Henry (the original Road House).

So much so, they're now meeting with writers to touch up a screenplay previously written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. It doesn’t sound like this film will have any time loops, or highly-trained sleeper agents with spotty memories, but there’s a lot from his past that Liman could bring to the table with his next feature film. The cult classic includes several martial arts scenes, which we would love to see in the remake, but we aren't sure that the same techniques were used. The 1989 movie centered on James Dalton, a professional "cooler," or bouncer, at a bar in a small town in Missouri.
The movie had its world premiere at the 2024 edition of SXSW in Austin, Texas. Although the film will premiere at South by Southwest, this film will not be on the big screen. This seems to be a modern take on the original story, given that nearly 40 years have passed since the release of the original Road House. There are some similarities in the plot, such as the fact that Dalton ends up working at a roadhouse where things are not as they seem. Another key difference is that Dalton is now a former UFC fighter, not just a bouncer. Not much is known about the plot of the Road House remake, but there are a few key differences.
It remains to be seen how much of that original plot the reboot might include, but if it stays true enough to the original concept, the new "Road House" flick will undoubtedly prove every bit as fun. At one point in the movie’s development process, Ronda Rousey was going to star in the lead role, but those talks eventually fizzled out and the movie sat on a shelf for a number of years before the current iteration began picking up steam. Though Rousey would go on to find tremendous success with WWE following the end of her UFC career, it’s a shame that the ass kicker, who is obsessed with Road House, never got her shot.
Co-star Lukas Gage (The White Lotus, You) recently spoke to RadioTimes.com about the intention behind the changes Liman made, revealing he preferred to think of Liman's Road House as a "reimagining and not a reboot". The trailer shows Gyllenhaal in his role as Dalton, a polite but dangerous man who can fight anyone and win despite the fact that he says there are no winners in a fight. The drama and the open letter didn't sit right with many people, as one person involved shared, "It's so disrespectful to everyone who worked hard on it. It's a great big fun streaming movie." However, Silver continued to push for a theatrical release and argued so much that the studio threatened to cut ties with him. Ari Emmanuel, CEO of WME parent Endeavor, lobbied on Silver's side, begging for SIlver not to be fired. At the time, Liman gushed, "I'm thrilled to put my own spin on the beloved Road House legacy," and Silver noted that he was "so excited to bring this newly imagined version to audiences around the world."
Troubled former UFC middleweight fighter Elwood Dalton makes a living scamming fighters on the underground circuit. He is approached by Frankie, the owner of an unruly roadhouse in the Florida Keys community of Glass Key, who offers him a job as head bouncer. Initially hesitant, Dalton takes up the offer after narrowly averting a suicide attempt with a freight train that destroys his car.
Along with the differences in the plot, there seems to be a much bigger cast in the remake. Rather than taking place in Missouri, this version of Road House takes place in the Florida Keys. In the film, Wesley continues to terrorize the town and Dalton until the very end, when Dalton seeks revenge for the life of his friend and takes out Wesley's henchmen.
